Can You Cut LED Strip Lights? Yes—Here’s How to Do It Right
One of the greatest advantages of LED strip lighting is its incredible flexibility—literally. Whether you’re lighting up kitchen counters, accenting shelves, or adding a soft glow behind your TV, LED strips can be cut and customized to fit your exact layout. At Artistic Lighting, we’re here to help you do it right—without compromising performance.
Why Cut LED Strip Lights?
LED strips aren’t just about stunning illumination—they’re about personalized lighting. Cutting your strips lets you:
-
Fit your lighting perfectly into unique spaces
-
Wrap around corners cleanly
-
Avoid extra material and overlap
-
Create a professional, custom finish
How to Cut LED Strip Lights (Without Breaking Them)
LED strips are built using a series of small, repeating circuits. Each strip includes clearly marked cut points, usually located between small copper pads. These marks indicate where one circuit ends and the next begins.
Only cut along these designated points. Cutting anywhere else can break the circuit and cause your strip to malfunction.
Bending Corners the Smart Way: Use Joiner Wires
While LED strips are somewhat flexible, directly folding or sharply bending them isn’t recommended. This can damage the strip and compromise the solder joints or internal circuitry.
At Artistic Lighting, we recommend using a Joiner Wire instead. Here’s why:
-
Cut your strip at the proper cut point, then connect both ends using our pre-soldered Joiner Wire.
-
This lets you create clean 90° turns or maneuver around tight corners—without damaging the strip.
-
While solder joints may loosen under strain, the PCB remains uncompromised, unlike with direct bends.
Pair your project with our LED Strip Accessories, including:
-
Strip-to-Strip Joiners – for extending or reconnecting segments
-
Mounting Clips and Channels – for a secure, pro-level finish
